Mayorkun is not a stranger to the Nigerian music scene, since his debut smash-hit “Eleko” till date, Mayorkun keeps finding ways to expand his music horizon, either through improvement in lyricism, looking for new artistes to work with or experimenting with foreign sounds, he never fails to impress the audience and core fans with his music. This Mayorkun aka Mayor of Lagos shows effectively on the 12-song capacity second album—Back In Office.
This new album, that is, Back In Office, has Mayorkun show his range, not just in song composition—lyrically and vocally—but by experimenting with sounds not accustomed to the Nigerian and West African scope, on “Nakupenda”, Mayor brings the East African flavour, even going beyond his way to speak the popular Swahili language from that region; Amapiano and other Southern Africa heavy drums also kept recurring in the production of songs, a few examples are the DJ Maphorisa produced “Jay Jay” and second track off the album – “Back In Office”.
Although Mayor is all for experimenting with sounds, thereby expanding his fanbase across Africa, he has not forgotten his roots, easily flowing on Afrobeat and pop instrumentals, better captioned as Afropop. He even surprises listeners by making a hiphop record, rapping on his newly found renaissance on the intro song – “Soldier Boy”.
Overall Back In Office is definitely a body of work you would want to listen to, thanks to Mayorkun and his featured guests in Victony (“Holy Father”), Gyakie (“Desire”), Flavour (“Feel Am”), Joeboy (“No Strings Attached”) and Kabza De Small & DJ Maphorisa (“Jay Jay”) made it easy for the “Let Me Know” crooner. Enjoy!
