Tomb Raider Series Currently in Development at Amazon Studios

Amazon Studios is currently developing a new Tomb Raider TV show, which would be the first in their Tomb Raider universe.

Initially, a series of video games focused on the adventures of Lara Croft, an archaeologist who explores tombs and ancient ruins. But, the games mass appeal and immense popularity, subsequently resulted in a 2001 live-action film titled Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, starring Angelina Jolie. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider—The Cradle of Life, released in 2003, was the sequel to this film.

Further, in 2018, a reboot titled “Tomb Raider” was released with Alicia Vikander playing Lara Croft. However, no word has been said about the film’s promised sequel. Amazon’s proposed Tomb raider universe is poised to encompass film, television, and games. This follows a recent announcement by Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics about an agreement to develop a new Tomb Raider single-player game, which would be part of its multi-platform Tomb Raider universe.

What’s more, according to sources, the show would be written by Fleabag creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Although Waller-Bridge gained critical acclaim for her roles on Fleabag and other similar comedies, the star is not new to the world of action filmmaking. She served as an executive producer and head writer on the hit spy thriller series “Killing Eve.”

The show, which lasted from 2018 to 2021, was nominated for five Golden Globes and 14 Emmy Awards during its run and won one of each. Waller-Bridge also played the role of L3-37 in the prequel film Solo: A Star Wars Story.

There is currently no one attached to play the role of Lara Croft in the new Tomb Raider series. However, due to the popularity of the source material, the developers will have no shortage of actors willing to play the lead. But, it’s unlikely that Angelina Jolie or Vikander would be returning for this project.
