American pop culture brand, iHeart, is set to hold the tenth edition of its premier award show, iHeartRadio Music Awards, which honour excellence in the American music industry, broadening to Latin America, and recently, the Afrobeats music scene.
This year’s iHeartRadio Music Awards feature the top names in the music world like Beyoncé, Bad Bunny, Taylor Swift, and BTS (to list a few), but of focus to the African or Afrobeats space is the nominations of its stars in Tems, Rema, Ckay, Fireboy DML, Wizkid, and Burna Boy.
Tems is the most nominated African act with five (5) nods, Rema happens to be the second most nominated act with two slots to his name, while CKay, Fireboy DML, Wizkid, and Burna Boy share one nomination each.
Tems‘ “Free Mind” (2020) receives a surprise nomination in the R&B Song of the Year list, as she also gets a special recognition in the Best New R&B Artist position; thanks to the sampled “Higher” in the popular song, “WAIT FOR U”, by Future featuring Drake and Tems, she (Tems) earns two additional nominations in the Best Collaboration, and Best Music Video categories respectively.
You will be pleasantly surprised to note that Tems is still vying for a fifth award alongside her Nigerian contemporaries for the inaugural Afrobeats Artist of the Year; Rema, Burna Boy, Fireboy DML, Wizkid, and CKay also receive a nomination each in that category.
Rema, however, will not be limited to just one slot. Thanks to the gallant “Calm Down” with Selena Gomez, he secures a nod for one of the Best Collaboration songs of the past music year.
The iHeartRadio Music Awards will hold on Monday, March 27th in The Dolby Thearte, Los Angeles. Definitely, one to watch out for!
Nigerians are joyous, fellow Africans rejoice with their colleague. Afrobeats made a big statement on the iHeartMusic Awards list, a big win for the ongoing movement. Congratulations to all the nominees.
