Nearly five years after the debut of Miles Morales and the Spider-Verse in the 2018 smash hit Spider-Man into that Spider-Verse, the official trailer for its sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, has been released, and with it comes the Spider-Verse in all its chaotic glory. The new trailer features a narration by Rio Morales, Miles’ mom, and shows Miles reunite with old friends Gwen Stacy and Peter B. Parker, while introducing a number of the new Spider-people, including Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Woman, The Bombastic Bag-Man, the Mangaverse Spider-Man, and the PlayStation game’s Spider-Man, among numerous other notable and obscure Spider-Man variants.
According to the film’s official synopsis, Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) returns for the next chapter in an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man across the multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) and a new team of “Spider-people” to battle a villain more powerful than anything they’ve ever faced. What’s more, fans can expect to see fan favorites like Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) and Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya) assist Miles in defeating the villainous Spot.

What’s more, in an interview with Empire, producer Phil Lord revealed that Spider-Man Across the Spider-verse, there will be six distinct animation styles, compared to one in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. “The first film had one animation style that dominated the movie.” This movie has six, so we’re taking those tools, adding all the things we learned on The Mitchells vs. the Machines, and then growing them further to accommodate the ambition of this movie. which is to wow you every time you enter a new environment and also to make sure that the style of the movie reflects the story and that the images are driven by feelings as opposed to some egg-headed art project. “Which it also is, by the way!”
While discussing the exploration of different earths and realities over the course of the movie, Lord had this to say: “The two that you saw in the teaser trailer were what’s called Earth-50101, which we’re calling “Mumbattan”—that’s based on an Indian comic-book look—and Nueva York from Spider-Man 2099’s world,” Miller explained. “That’s based on Syd Mead-style illustrations of what the future might look like.” There’s also Gwen’s world, which is Earth-65. “And that was a watercolor-wash style that’s reminiscent of the covers of her comic books.” Miles Morales’ journey has only just begun; the Spider-Verse awaits. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse opens in theaters on June 2, 2023.
