Box office projections for the Blue Beetle movie are out and they do not look good.
DC has had a terrible year at the box office, and things are about to worsen. The studio is undoubtedly in a tight spot following the failures of The Flash, Black Adam, and Shazam 2 at the box office. This is evident in the plans to reboot its Cinematic universe. However, DC still has two more films to release before that can happen.
DC has slated both film’s, Aquaman 2 and Blue Beetle, for release this year. But when you have a battered brand image amongst fans, an incoherent vision, several reshoots, a writers and actors strike, and a looming reboot, It’s hard to see how your movies would fare well at the box office. Even DC’s highly anticipated film, The Flash, bombed at the box office in June. It is ending its theatrical run as one of the biggest flops in Box office history.
The Blue Beetle movie is the next film to debut after the Flash making it the penultimate DCEU film. The film follows Jamie Reyes, played by Xolo Mariduena (Cobra Kai), as he takes up the mantle of Blue Beetle. The film centers on Jaime Reyes as he suddenly finds himself possessing an ancient relic of alien biotechnology called the Scarab. The Scarab chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host. Thus bestowing hum with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers. Forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero Blue Beetle. If you haven’t seen the trailer, picture a mix between Venom and Iron Man, and you have Blue Beetle.
However, with The Flash’s abysmal performance alongside the poor performance of other recent DC outings. The chances of Blue Beetle being a success are incredibly low. Box Office Pro currently projects that Blue Beetle will earn $17 million in its opening weekend. Box Office Pro also projects that the film will gross a total of $55 million over its entire run. This is extremely low for a superhero film but disappointing is fast becoming the norm for DC projects. Blue Beetle will debut with the lowest box office opening for a DCEU project if the film does not exceed these projections. Lower than 2020’s Wonder Woman (1984), which had $16.7 million.
Likewise, its total gross estimates of 27–55 million could see the film becoming the biggest flop of the DCEU. Which is ironic, seeing as the film’s $120 million budget makes it the third-cheapest DCEU movie. Above only Shazam’s $85 million and Birds of Prey’s $82 million. Only time will tell if Blue Beetle ends up a surprise success story or just another casualty of the mismanagement of the DCEU.
In other Box Office news, Box Office Pro also projects that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem will win big at the box office next month.Box Office Pro projects thar the film will gross between $101 and $145 million in the domestic market. Outperforming blockbusters like Meg 2: The Trench and Gran Turismo, which share its release dates.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which is an animated feature, Follows the four iconic turtle brothers. Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael, as they explore the human world for the first time. At the same time, attempting to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers.
Blue Beetle is scheduled to premiere on August 18. While Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem will be released on August 2.
