PSG are named French champions for the third year in a row following the cancellation of the Ligue 1 season. France’s top-flight season was called to a halt on Tuesday and after a meeting on Thursday, LFP President Didier Quillot confirmed that the Parisiens have been handed the title on the basis of points-per-game.
PSG had a 12-point lead over second-placed Olympique de Marseille when the season was suspended as part of the French government’s measures to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus last month.
The LFP also crowned Lorient as Ligue 2 champions.
French prime minister Edouard Philippe on Tuesday said that “the 2019-2020 season of professional sports, including football, (would) not be able to resume.”
Based on the final rankings,
PSG, Marseille, and Stade Rennes will represent the Ligue 1 in the UEFA Champions League next season while Lille, Reims, and Nice will play in the Europa League, Toulouse Amiens and were relegated from the top flight while Lorient and Lens were promoted.
