The new year, 2023, could not have started better for the fast-rising singer-songwriter Minz. Just a few days after the New Year’s jubilations, he and hot cake BNXN fka Buju shared the visualizer video for the remix of his (Minz’s) “WO WO” single released in November 2022. Nineteen (19) days into January, the world will get to hear the final product of the collaboration, with an additional verse from rapper-singer Blaqbonez.
WO WO is vocalised as a homonym in the song. On one hand, it means ‘ugly’ when pronounced with Yoruba tone, on the other hand, it is pronounced as ‘Woah Woah’, as if to express shock, surprise, or astonishment.
In WO WO (Remix), all three acts—Minz, BNXN fka Buju, and Blaqbonez—reflect on the past, the hurdlesthey had to scale to be in their respective present state, and the blessings that come with money and fame. They do this in a gracious tone, knowing it took the power of the Almighty to get to where they are today.
Minz retrospect: “Back when things, wo wo / Too many things I dey think, wo wo / . . . / I pray to God make my blessings fall”. Now that situations have changed, Minz is thankful and well aware of his wide reach, especially as his music continues to travel far. “I never talk anything, wo wo / Dem don dey do shakiti bobo”, he flexes.
BNXN brought his A+ pen game to the booth when recording his verse for WO WO (Remix) and it shows in the lyrics. Straight away, he makes it clear he didn’t come to sweeten the track with an infectious hook as it is his custom, “This is not another chorus, just another bonus”.
He would later go on to narrate how one “Mr. Nacademus” failed to reward his talent financially and how the music hustle started on a rough note. After the rhythmic rant, BNXN fka Buju went on a braggadocios spree, speaking on how much higher he is in the ranks in comparison to his fellow ‘new school’ artistes.
A bar that is sure to raise eyebrows is “Please do not compare an AK to a damn Luger” because of the apparent beef between him and Jonzing World signee, Ruger; but BNXN seems to be smart enough to have exchanged the “R” for “L” in his lyrics, although both Ruger and Luger are named after guns. Fans are sure to speculate a diss at the former.
For Blaqbonez, flexing his hard-earned wealth is the order of the day. “Big flex / Reset / Don’t get it twisted / I’m still flexing / Thank God that we still flexing / Thank God that we still flexing / On the block and they still searching / Rich as f–k and we still stacking / Six bed mansion for this lekki and I no kill person”, he opens his verse gallantly.
Altogether, WO WO (Remix) shows off the beautiful lives of these stars and their wish to continue living the soft life.
Mike Bgrz is responsible for curating the mid-tempo instrumental which subtly puts listeners in a reflective state once they hit play. A sublime effort by Mike Bgrz and all the singers involved in making WO WO (Remix).
