Each week we delve through last round of Premier League’s action and compile our divisional Top Stats of the Week, with the latest round of fixtures including a thriller between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield. Chelsea regained control of the Premier League after defeating Southampton, but Manchester United and Everton remain in the pursuing group after sharing the spoils at Old Trafford.
Elsewhere Brentford are now the highest London club in the division after beating West Ham, whilst a relegation six-pointer between Burnley and Norwich ended in a forgettable goalless draw.
Leeds United earned their first win of the season this weekend against Watford, winning 1-0 at Elland Road to climb out of the Premier League’s relegation zone. Marcelo Bielsa’s team benefited from Diego Llorente’s return from injury on both ends of the field, with the Spain international’s ease in possession allowing Leeds to advance the ball from deep. There were some cagey moments, but Llorente proved to be the match-winner against the Hornets after instinctively turning in a headed knock-down inside the box.
Meanwhile, with the help of OPTA stats we have gathered some mouthwatering stats from the weekend’s action.
- 1 – Liverpool have only managed to beat Manchester City on one of the last seven occasions in the Premier League (D3 L3), conceding 14 times across those seven fixtures.
- 7 – Mohamed Salah has now scored in each of his last seven appearances for Liverpool in all competitions, equalling his longest scoring streak for the Reds (last achieved in April 2018).
- 21 – Phil Foden (21y 128d) is the youngest player to score in three consecutive Premier League appearances against Liverpool since Romelu Lukaku in November 2013 (20y 194d).
- 4 – Brentford are unbeaten in all four away Premier League matches this season (W2 D2), becoming the first side to avoid defeat in their first four away games in the competition since Hull City in the 2008-09 season.
- 6 – Harry Kane hasn’t scored in any of his last six Premier League appearances, his longest scoreless streak in the competition since failing to net in his first six games of the 2015-16 campaign.
- 2 – Leicester failed to win a Premier League game in which they were ahead at half time by 2+ goals for the first time since October 2003 (4-3 defeat v Wolves). Before today, they had won each of their last 26 games in the competition when leading by 2+ goals at the break.
- 48 – Jeffrey Schlupp’s equaliser for Crystal Palace against Leicester came just 48 seconds after coming off the bench; the second-quickest goal by a substitute in the Premier League this season, after teammate Odsonne Édouard v Spurs (29 seconds)
- 33 – Jamie Vardy (17) and Kelechi Iheanacho (16) have scored 33 goals between them in the 32 Premier League games when they have both started together.
- 3 – Kelechi Iheanacho is the third Nigerian in Premier League history to score on his birthday, after Jay-Jay Okocha (Bolton) in 2004 and Obafemi Martins (Newcastle) in 2008.
- 11 – Son Heung-min has been directly involved in 11 goals in his last 12 Premier League games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (6 goals, 5 assists).
- 3 – Brentford are unbeaten away from home in the Premier League so far (W1 D2) – only four teams have ever remained unbeaten in their first four on the road in the competition, with Blackburn, Coventry and Ipswich doing so in 1992-93, and Hull City in 2008-09 the other.
- 43% – Crystal Palace have had fewer shots on target than any other Premier League side this season (14). However, they’ve scored six goals, with only Brentford (50%) having a better shots on target to goals ratio than the Eagles this term (43%)
- 5 – Arsenal have scored just five goals in their opening seven league games, their fewest at this stage of a season since 1986-87 (also five goals), in what was George Graham’s first campaign in charge of the Gunners.
- 4 – James Ward-Prowse is the fourth Southampton player to both score and be sent off in a Premier League match after Peter Crouch (May 2005), Sadio Mané (October 2015) and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (December 2018).
- 2 – Trevoh Chalobah is Chelsea’s joint-top scorer at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League under Thomas Tuchel (2 goals), despite only attempting two shots.
