“A young entrepreneur turns Belgium’s Moroccan community on its head by trying to change their funeral tradition.”
Netflix has released the official trailer for the Belgium comedy series entitled “Soil”. Soil was filmed and produced in Belgium, however its focus is on a Moroccan community in the country.
The series explores the dilemma faced by the relatives of a dead Muslim person when it comes to the burial. Ishmael, mostly referred to as Smile assesses the questions asked, “Do we bury him here or in his native country?” and in response, he thinks, “What if we import soil from Morocco into Belgium to bury our deceased?” Ishmael then begins to revamp the family business engaging the risk of importing soil from Morocco to bury the deceased within his community. Unbeknownst to him, he opens Pandora’s ‘coffin’.
The comedy series originally premiered on VIER on TV in Belgium late 2021, and it will make its debut on Netflix on the 17th of March. The members of the cast are Yassine Ouaich, Charlotte De Bruyne, Barbara Sarafian, Tom Vermeir, Saïd Boumazoughe, Mourade Zeguendi, Ahlaam Teghadouini, Dries Heyneman, Ward Kerremans, Emilie De Roo and Wannes Cappelle.
“Soil” is produced by Gent-based outfit Lumière following its commission by VIER (SBS), and it is made in collaboration with Netflix and Telenet.
