Tems makes Nigerian history at the BET Awards 2022

Tems

Tems keeps proving why she does not “need no other body”. Since her emergence into the Nigerian mainstream media, she has built an outstanding portfolio as a singer extraordinaire. With two impressive EPs and successful features with Wizkid, Drake and Future, Tems solidified her position as one of the finest R&B stars in the music world. The BET Awards by show of appreciation congratulated Tems for a stellar year in 2021 as she scoops 2 plaques at the BET Awards 2022.

Tems won Best International Act, a tightly contested category which had Dave (UK rapper), Fireboy DML (Nigerian prodigy), Major League DJz (South African disc-jockey and producer duo), and Tayc (Cameroonian-French singer) as nominees amongst others. She also was accredited for her contribution to the 2021 stand-out song, Essence by Wizkid with a feature of Justin Bieber on the remix; this led to Tems being one of the recipients of the Best Collaboration glass plaque for this year’s edition of the BET Awards.

To express how monumental it is for Tems as she wins her first pair of the esteemed U.S award, she makes history as the first female Nigerian artiste to win the BET Awards and just the second female African act to emerge triumphant at the event beside Sho Madjozi (South Africa).

In her thank you speech for Best Collaboration, she dedicates the win to Africa, saying “Great things [are] happening out of Africa right now, the light is on everyone there. This [award] is dedicated to Africa and Nigeria.
