Superman Legacy Cast Adds Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, and Nathan Fillion

It is now confirmed that Superman Legacy, the film set to relaunch the DC Universe in 2025, will introduce a fully formed universe. Meaning Superman will be debuting in a universe where superheroes already exist. This confirmation follows the news that three new new actors have joined the film’s cast to play iconic DC Comics heroes.

Vanity Fair exclusively revealed that Nathan Fillion will play Guy Gardner, one of Earth’s Green Lanterns; Isabela Merced will play Hawkgirl; and Edi Gathegi will play Mister Terrific. This casting news for the film, follows the recent unveiling of David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

Fillion, who appeared in the recent Guardians of the Galaxy, is a mainstay in Gunn’s films, dating back to the director’s 2006 horror-comedy “Slither.” His character, Gardner, is one of several Green Lanterns in the DC Universe, and his companions will debut in a streaming series for Max titled “Lanterns.”. The series, which Gunn has described as being in the same vein as True Detective, will follow Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they attempt to resolve a mystery that will affect the new DCU.

Merced, who will play Hawkgirl started her off as her child star in Nickelodeon’s “100 Things to Do Before High School”. Then venturing into blockbusters like 2017’s “Transformers: The Last Knight. Her character is one of DC’s oldest superheroes, distinguished by her wings, masked appearance, and arsenal of medieval weapons, including maces and swords. The character debuted in 1940 alongside her counterpart, Hawkman. 2022’s Black Adam where Aldis Hodge played Hawkman served as his live-action debut.

“X-Men: First Class,” star Gathegi will portray Michael Holt, aka Mister Terrific. He is one of the smartest men in the DC universe and a tactician and inventor who utilizes his multipurpose, mechanical “T-Spheres” to fight crime.

Superman Legacy, is simply the first live-action project in the new DCU and not the first project in the new universe. Max animated series, Creature Commandos will be the project to launch the universe.

Many fans have voiced concerns that debuting several heroes in a film about Superman and his supporting cast will affect the narrative and ultimately hinder the new universe. Gunn addressed these concerns in a threads post. The filmmaker started that, “They fit the story I am telling. Story always comes first.”

The DC studios co-chief, Peter Safran while presenting the new DC Studios slate in January. Stated that the film would focus “on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way. He is kind in a world that thinks of kindness as old-fashioned.”

Gunn and Peter Safran, also confirmed that accessibility is a priority to them. They want viewers to be able to go into any DCU movie and show without deep binge-watching research. This was by stated Safran in an interview with Vanity Fair. He said, “The good news is, if you have seen nothing that we have done before, you can watch Superman Legacy, Creature Commandos, Peacemaker season two, and Blue Beetle, all of that.” He added that. “We are trying to minimize audience confusion and maximize their enjoyment.”

Superman: Legacy”will release on July 11, 2025.
