Although Star Wars content continues to flourish on Disney Plus, numerous fan favorites such as The Mandalorian and The Bad Batch have earned widespread acclaim. The film arm of the billion-dollar franchise continues to struggle following 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker’s poor performance at the box office.
Further, despite having an eager and built-in fanbase, developments on future“Star Wars” movies have stalled considerably with no solution in sight. According to Lucasfilm, the next Star Wars movie will debut in cinemas in December 2025, six years after “The Rise of Skywalker.” However, the studio has yet to greenlight or begin production on any film script.
What’s more, according to Deadline, previously approved projects such as the Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman)-directed Rogue Squadron have been removed from active development. In December 2020 by Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy stated that Jenkins project was a one-off adventure. However, according to insiders, the project is no longer in active development at the studio. Furthermore, in September 2022, Disney also removed the title from its initial December 2023 release.
When asked about the state of Rogue Squadron in December, Jenkins remarked in a statement that she was still developing “Rogue Squadron,” but “I don’t know if it will happen or not.” Similarly,in September 2019, LucasFilm also confirmed that Marvel’s Kevin Feige would be producing a Star Wars project written by Michael Waldron.
However, according to insiders, that mystery project is also no longer in active development. Which is understandable as Waldron is currently busy writing 2026’s Avengers: Secret Wars and Feige oversees MCU Phase 5.Likewise, although Rian Johnson’s (knives out) planned Star Wars project is currently not in active development, the project is still on the table.
The only Star Wars film confirmed to be in active development is Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit. The Oscar-winning director is currently developing the script, but the project is still in its early days. What’s more, he is also in talks to star in the film. Lucasfilm is still committed to a December 19, 2025, return to the big screen. Despite the uncertainty currently plaguing the franchise’s theatrical future.
In addition, inside sources say that the studio is developing a “Star Wars” movie from two-time Oscar-winning documentarian and renowned director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. With Damon Lindelof (”Watchmen ”) and Justin Britt-Gibson (“Counterpart”) penning the movie’s script. Fans can however look forward to several upcoming Star Wars series on Disney+, including Ashoka, The Acolyte, Andor season 2, and Skeleton Crew.
