Saudi Pro League (SPL) clubs are set to pursue top-tier players in the upcoming January transfer window, aligning with their strategic shift after a substantial £784 million ($972 million) investment during the summer. SPL Director of Football, Michael Emenalo, emphasized the league’s focus on recruiting players of the “highest level” to complement stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, and Karim Benzema.
Despite earlier links to players like Jadon Sancho and Raphaël Varane from Manchester United and a renewed interest in Mohamed Salah by Al Ittihad, Emenalo clarified that the era of multiple signings in a single window for Saudi clubs is concluding. He expressed the hope that the upcoming January window won’t be overly busy, as he believes the aggressive summer recruitment has equipped most clubs with the necessary elements.
In an interview with the SPL, Emenalo reflected on the league’s achievements in entering the market assertively while affording every club an opportunity to enhance their squads. Notable acquisitions, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mane, Jordan Henderson, N’golo Kanté, and Roberto Firmino, were part of the league’s strategy to attract top talent by offering lucrative salaries.
