The Transformers have been a pop-culture fixture for nearly 30 years, evolving from a Hasbro toy line and cartoon series initially presented by Hasbro in 1984 to a multibillion-dollar film franchise. Despite the franchise’s first movie office success as the Shia Labeouf-led trilogy appealed to fans and critics alike, the succeeding Mark Wahlberg-led Transformers 4 and 5 were commercial failures.This resulted in the cancellation of future projects, and the Transformers IP appeared to be dormant.
Fortunately for fans, Paramount Pictures has maintained their faith in the Transformers franchise’s potential and has made strategic approaches to rebooting the franchise in recent years. This was evident in the 2018 Bumblebee, which received critical acclaim for its innovative approach to the Transformers franchise.
The film studio also released the first trailer for the upcoming seventh film in the franchise, “Rise of the Beasts,” which is a sequel to Bumblebee and yet another reboot of the overall Transformers storyline. Rise of the beast is directed by Steven Caple Jr., and revolves around two humans, ex-military gear head Noah and museum researcher Elena, played by Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback, who become inadvertently involved in yet another conflict between the Autobots and the Decepticons.
Though this follows the standard Transformers plotlines of unsuspecting humans discovering the existence of Cybertronians such as Optimus Prime (played by Peter Cullen) and Bumblebee who have been hiding in secret on Earth disguised as various types of ordinary human vehicles. Rise of the Beast would adapt the Beast Wars storyline, introducing to live action for the first time several Beast Wars’ Maximals and Predacons which are Transformers with alternate forms based on organic animals such as Optimus Primal, played by Ron Perlman, who has a gorilla form.
Rise of the Beasts, like its predecessor (Bumblebee), is set in the 1990s and is expected to kick off a new trilogy of Transformers films. Though the first trailer for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts introduces the Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons, fans will be happy to see Optimus Prime and Bumblebee return.Anthony Ramos, Dominique Fishback, Tobe Nwigwe, Peter Dinklage, Liza Koshy, John DiMaggio, David Sobolov, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, and Cristo Fernández star in the film, which will be released in theaters on June 9th, 2023.
