21-year-old singer, Ugbekile David Osemeke, professionally known as Boy Spyce is the newest Mavin activation, he marks this grand signing by releasing his debut EP, the eponymous Boy Spyce containing 5 colourful songs featuring productions from Don Jazzy and Andre Vibes.
Boy Spyce starts off with the heartbreaking Dreams, an ode to relationships going south due to different career paths and aspirations by both parties in the relationship, eventually leading to breakups and emotional distress; Bad Things switches the mood up a bit as Boy Spyce takes his time to compose the sensual R&B record, “Girl I’ll do somethings to you (ahn ahn, ahn ahn, ahn ahn) / Many many many many bad things“, he promises his lover.
Wayo is the most party-flavoured track off the EP as Boy Spyce brings the upbeat rhythms and melodies to match the danceable Afropop Highlife instrumentals but in essence what he desires is loyalty and faithfulness from his partner, “So baby no go do me / No Wayo Wayo (No no no no no)” he pleads on the hook. On Nobody, he sings to being drunk in love while he crowns it all with the beautifully well-written Destiny track, an inspirational song which serves as motivation to hustlers and every go-getter to keep on the hard fight and determination, it will eventually turn out successful for them all, “Person work hard you dey call am grace / When you dey sleep he dey work for rain / . . . / I won get money like Dangote o / Go hustle Shey you nor dey shame“, continuing he warns, “E be destiny / Man no go fit change destiny / Tamper not with destiny / Osalobua be blessing me“, confidently declaring music as his calling.
Lyricism, cohesive tracklisting, euphonic vocals, deep emotions, midtempo productions are all takeaways from Boy Spyce self-titled EP.
