Ycee (born Oludemilada Martin Alejo) is the highlight for Nigeria’s magazine Zikoko! Man Like series on which he talked pretty much everything relating to his music—family upbringing, early music days and inspiration, career defining moments, family’s reception of his craft etc. One thing that caught my attention while reading the interview article was when Ycee said his mother would love for him to make a gospel album.
“When did your family start to warm up to the idea of you becoming an artist?” was the question that prompted the quite surprising answer from Ycee; he replied it was the year 2012 when he released his first music video under (formal record label) Tinny that they realised how serious he really wanted to do music. Ycee even said his mother is always one of the first people to listen to his music anytime he drops, “Anytime I release music, she’s one of the first to listen to it. She really wants me to make a gospel album but I don’t know“, Ycee says, ending the statement with “I’ve not had my Kanye West moment yet” in reference to American musician, Kanye West who switched to being more spiritually inclined with his music since 2019.
On why he does not see himself making a gospel album soon, Ycee says he makes music from a personal perspective and cumulative experience, “They’re mostly about my personal experiences . . . The studio is where I can pour myself when I’m going through emotional stuff.“, he explains.
