Kylian Mbappé has described his own club Paris Saint-Germain as a “divisive team,” amid a contract standoff between the player and the Ligue 1 champions.
Relations between PSG and Mbappé worsened last month after the France international announced he would not extend his contract. The contract which expires at the end of next season and allows him to depart for free in June 2024.
PSG would not be able to recuperate any of the $197 million ($180 million) they paid to get him if he extends his deal. According to PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, they won’t let him leave for nothing.
Mbappé, who has led Ligue 1 in goals each of the last five seasons, continues to be heavily linked to a transfer to Real Madrid.
“I think that playing for PSG doesn’t help much because it’s a divisive team, a divisive club,” he said in an interview with France Football magazine.
PSG representatives did not immediately reply when contacted by Reuters for comment Saturday.
PSG have won nine of the past 11 league titles but Mbappé’s frustration lies with their failure to win the Champions League. The French team went out of the champions league in the round of 16 this year when they were beaten by Bayern Munich, with Mbappe failing to score in both legs
