Matthew Perry Dead At 54: Fans Pay Their Respects to the Late “Friends” Star

Matthew Perry, a beloved pop culture icon and star of the hit sitcom “Friends,” is dead at 54.

According to TMZ and the LA Times, which were the first media outlets to report the news, First responders found the star dead at his home in Los Angeles on Saturday. Per Los Angeles law enforcement, Perry was unconscious in a hot tub at his house, and attempts to revive him failed.

While speaking to AFP, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson stated, “We responded at 4:10 pm… It is a death investigation for a male in his 50s,” however, he did not confirm the victim’s name.

Further, Scot Williams, a Los Angeles Police Capt. and leader of the Robbery Homicide Division that is investigating Perry’s death, said the “cause of death may not be known for some time, but at this point foul play is not suspected.” He also added that the Los Angeles County coroner’s office will determine the cause of death.

Likewise, the Los Angeles fire department confirmed it had responded to a “water emergency.” But could not confirm reports that Perry had drowned. Matthew Perry was best known for his portrayal of Chandler Bing on the popular sitcom “Friends.” The show ran from 1994 to 2004 and lasted for 10 seasons. Despite ending nearly two decades ago, the show still remains a pop culture phenomenon.

“Friends” followed the lives of six friends living in Manhattan, New York, as they navigated adult life together, and dealt with divorce, dating, kids, and careers.

Fans of the show have taken to social media to pay their respects to the late icon.
