Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever surged into theaters throughout the continent this past weekend (November 11–13, including previews) and lit up the box office. The sequel to Ryan Coogler’s 2018 smash Black Panther proved a magnet for moviegoers across all regions, with slightly under 300,000 attendances recorded.
With a box office total of 240 million in West Africa, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever achieved the greatest industry opening weekend of all time. In East Africa, the picture grossed Kes 25 million, making it the greatest opening weekend box office of 2022 as well as the biggest post-pandemic opening to date. In Southern Africa, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever grossed R16.5 million, making it the largest opening weekend box office of 2022. Black Panther, released in 2018, remains the number one film of all time in both East and West Africa, and the number two film of all time in Southern Africa.
Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever directors and actors recently went to Lagos to celebrate the film’s release, creating history as the first official African Marvel Studios screening in Nigeria.
On Sunday, November 6, 2022, director Ryan Coogler, together with Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Tenoch Huerta Meja, and local artists featured in the film, joined dignitaries and guests for the black carpet premiere event.
On Wednesday, 9 November 2022, Johannesburg held the South African Premiere of the film, and invited Connie Chiume (Mining Tribe Elder “Zawavari”), Dr Ernest Khalema (Language and Cultural Consultant on the film), and local musicians from the soundtrack.
In Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira), and the Dora Milaje (featuring Florence Kasumba) strive to safeguard their country after King T’Challa’s death. As the Wakandans attempt to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must come together and build a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda with the assistance of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman). The film stars Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Mabel Cadena, and Alex Livinalli, as well as Tenoch Huerta Meja as Namor, king of a hidden undersea realm.
