Inaki Williams, who plies his trade with Spanish club Athletic Club, has committed to Ghana for his international career. Prior to this year’s World Cup, the 28-year-old striker, who has previously played for Spain, finalized a transfer to the Black Stars, giving him the opportunity to compete for his home country in Qatar. Williams, a Ghanaian by birth who played one match for Spain’s senior team in a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2016, is now qualified to play for Ghana at the World Cup, where they’ll face South Korea, Portugal, and Uruguay in a challenging Group H. Williams was born in Bilbao to Ghanaian parents.
Williams, speaking on his switch to Ghana said; “Every step we take forward has its own meaning… a glance into the future which leaves a trace itself. A legacy. My parents have raised me with values based on humility, respect and love,” Williams said. “That’s why I feel the moment has come for me to find my origins within myself and with Africa and Ghana which means so much to me and my family.”
Williams joined Athletic Club when he was 18 and has remained a crucial member of their squad ever since. He has played in 200 straight La Liga games and more over 300 first-team outings for the Spanish club. He has 73 goals in all for the club at the senior level and has won one title with them (the 2020–21 Supercopa de Espana).
