Following a week’s worth of searching, DC Studios has finally found its Supergirl.
According to reports, Australia-born Milly Alcock will play Supergirl in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe. The fast-rising star beat out Meg Donnelly (Disney’s Zombies) and Emilia Jones (CODA) for the role.
Milly is most recognized for her portrayal as little Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s epic fantasy drama “House of the Dragon.” DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirmed the announcement on Instagram, stating that the actress embodies Kara (Supergirl).
Milly Alcock will headline the previously announced “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” A film that is based on the 2022 Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic of the same name. However, filming on that project is not scheduled to begin anytime soon. This is because DC studios is yet to attach a director to the film. But actress and writer Ana Nogueira is already writing the screenplay.
Although there is no official confirmation, sources have indicated that Milly Alcock’s Supergirl will make her debut in a DCU project before eventually headlining Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Furthermore, this DCU project could be Gunn’s Superman: Legacy,” which is scheduled to begin filming in a few months. This will allow the audience to get a glimpse of the dynamic and build interest in Supergirl’s own story.
While announcing the Supergirl project, Gunn stated that the DCU version of the character will be different from previous iterations. He states that:
“In our series, we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, and Supergirl, who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”
