Since arriving in Germany during his incredible debut season at Bayern Munich, expectations have followed Kane, and it appears that records have too. In just 27 appearances across all competitions since leaving Tottenham in August of last year, the England captain has contributed eight assists and 28 goals.
In addition to becoming the first player to score a hat-trick in his debut Der Klassiker appearance—the match between Bayern and Borussia Dortmund—he has scored 24 goals in the Bundesliga, the most goals scored by a player in his first 20 league appearances.
Kane, needs 18 more goals in the 14 games remaining to beat Poland striker Lewandowski’s single-season Bundesliga record of 41.
“I’m always extremely proud to have those sort of records,” Kane told BBC Sport. “It’s not something I set out to do at the start but once you hear about them and once people are talking about them, it of course means you’re doing something really well.
“If you’d have told me I was going to do that at the start of the year, of course I’d have taken it – so I’m really happy from that sense, but as always, we try and push and try and see how far we can get.”
Kane might have added the record Premier League goal scorer to his list of personal achievements had he chosen to remain in England; rather, he traveled to Germany in pursuit of success with a squad that was accustomed to winning championships.
Some on social media are making jokes about how Kane’s “safe bet” transfer in the chase for the elusive crown is going to backfire, with Bayer Leverkusen leading the table by two points and being undefeated thus far.
In a match that is crucial to the title battle, Bayern will play a pivotal role on Saturday when they take on Leverkusen, the surprising league leaders led by Xabi Alonso.
Bayern has only had more points at this point in the season in three of their eleven straight championship-winning campaigns, with 50 points from 20 games.
Kane added: “I’ve made it clear that I want to be winning team trophies and that’s one of the things that’s missing from my career so far.
“But as always I’m not going to panic, either way I’m going to keep my head down, keep doing my best for the team and hopefully that starts with a good win on Saturday.”
