This was announced at the National Breakfast Meeting on Thursday 19 March 2020 by President Nana Akufo-Addo.
The minister of media, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, received more updates on Twitter, stressing that the cases were being well handled by the Ghana health services. Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo also held a breakfast prayer meeting at the Jubilee House with leaders of the clergy in a bid to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
In a brief comment, Akufo-Addo said: “We’re not in normal times … but that’s going to happen too.” He
urged the church to continue endorsing government measures to monitor the pandemic’s spread as Ghana reports its ninth event.
“The World Health Organization tells us that some 180,000 infections and some 7000 deaths have been recorded from this pandemic. We also learned, sadly on Wednesday, that three Ghanaians living abroad had lost their lives as a result. With nine confirmed cases of infections, we might as well count ourselves lucky as one of the countries least hit by the Coronavirus,” President Akufo-Addo said.
Meanwhile, in response to the outbreak of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the government has now laid before Parliament the Imposition of Restrictions Act, 2020. The Bill is intended to provide a legal basis for the implementation of controls, in accordance with the Constitution, as a swift and effective means of responding to emergencies.
Ghana Media announced earlier that a new 50-bed capacity infectious disease treatment center
was being constructed by the government at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. The facility to be completed in a month is to treat the cases of coronavirus and other infectious diseases. The new facility would expand the Ridge and Tema General Hospital treatment facilities for the disease.
