An upset supporter confronted Ghana coach Chris Hughton after their unexpected loss in the Africa Cup of Nations finals on Sunday, according to team officials. The surprising outcome saw the Cape Verde Islands, the smallest team in the competition, secure a victory with a stoppage-time goal.
“It was the normal thing that happens when a team loses a game,” said Ghana team spokesperson Henry Asante to ESPN, downplaying the event. The coach was accosted by the supporter, who demanded that he either get better or quit.
“There was no physical altercation. He was later taken out of the hotel by security guys on duty. It’s that simple.”

Hughton, addressing the disappointing result in a press conference, explained that they had implemented a different game plan and adjusted their playing system to be more offensive. Despite equalizing in the second half, a stoppage-time goal by Garry Rodrigues secured the victory for the Cape Verde Islands.
Reflecting on the defeat, Hughton expressed deep disappointment and acknowledged the high expectations of the Ghanaian people for the tournament. This loss followed a previous defeat in the World Cup qualifiers to the Comoros Islands in November.
The coach, a former Ireland international with Ghanaian roots, has been leading the team since March, with a record of four wins in 11 games. Despite the setbacks, Hughton emphasized the team’s commitment and understanding of the fans’ expectations.
