On his international breakout single (Peru), Fireboy DML joyfully announced “My third album is loading” and with pleasure, he ushers listeners into his newfound fame with his third studio album—Playboy. An album consisting of 14 tracks with a playtime of 43 minutes.
One major theme stands out on the album, which can be summed up in these three words: No Dull Moment. Whether he is philandering, indulging in booze and smoke or touring the world, Fireboy DML never seems to have a dull moment in his life, especially since the critically acclaimed successful song, Peru got released and he shows that elegantly through melodies and harmonies on Playboy album.
Putting aside the pre-released Playboy single, one song which encapsulates the concept behind the album is Ashawo in which he apologies for his playboy’s mannerisms but blames it on the fame and alcohol instead of taking full accountability for his actions; he even says he will not be bothered if his girl decides to cheat on him as payback. In his words: “No be my fault oh na shayo / Na all of us be ashawo / If I cheat on you, I’m sorry / And if you cheat on me, no worry”.
Fireboy features four international acts on his third studio album, Chris Brown (USA) and Shenseea (Jamaica) shine on Diana, Dominican-American rapper, Euro complements Fireboy DML’s pop-rap style on Adore while Ed Sheeran shows off sonorously in Peru (UK remix). Rema and Asake are the only hometown featured artistes, they appear on Compromise and Bandana respectively.
Unlike his previous two albums which are mainly R&B/Soul projects, Playboy tends to the upbeat Pop genre more than any other soundscape, however, a few songs change the general sound dynamic on the album; Afro Highlife and Ashawo stay true to the indigenous Afrobeat-Highlife production while Glory, the 14th track, gives off a Soft Rock feel, especially with the addition of the electronic guitar.
Playboy album continues to testify to Fireboy’s willingness to explore sounds and his articulate pen-game which occasionally has a chatty touch, not to mention his ever-silvery vocals. The producers who worked with him also made sure to bring a diverse approach instrumentally. You will enjoy listening to Playboy!
