Starting off with the Afrobeat-infused Caribbean calypso “Mayana”, Asa set off the right tone and mood for her newly released fifth album—V (named after the symbol for “5” in Roman numerals). One thing also stands out from V, it is Asa’s intentionality buying the afrobeat latest resurgent wave as she delves all-in into it on various tracks including “Show Me Off”, “IDG (feat. Wizkid)”, “Mayana”, “Morning Man” amongst others.
Unlike her previous albums, Asa decided to bring on star power features and they justly added their spice to the individual track they appear on, Wizkid being inspirational with his choice of words on “IDG” (short for “I Dun Go”), The Cavemen. adding their usual sultry sound on “Good Times” and Ghanaian Amaarae did her thing on “All I Ever Wanted”, bringing her intriguingly distinctive vocal chords on the song’s second verse; not forgetting the WurlD’s additional vocals on “Ocean”.
V is laced with 10 mellowy-sung tracks evoking a calm feeling of relaxation and love while springing the listener’s urge to move his/her body occasionally like on “Love Me Or Give Me Red Wine” and “All I Ever Wanted” (just to name a few). All through the 30-minute playtime of V, excellent lyricism and brilliant tracklisting is spotlighted.
