Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta emphasizes his commitment to defending the club following his critique of the officiating during the 1-0 loss to Newcastle last Saturday. Arteta deemed the decision to allow Anthony Gordon’s winning goal at St. James’ Park “embarrassing” and a “disgrace.” Arsenal, in solidarity with Arteta, supported his comments in an official statement, which drew criticism from pundit Gary Neville.
Arteta expressed on Tuesday, “It is my responsibility to provide a clear and honest assessment. My duty is to protect the reputation of my players and the club in the best possible manner. This is my consistent approach, and I will continue to uphold this responsibility. It is integral to my character to defend the interests of my club.”
The Football Association has contacted Arteta and Arsenal, seeking clarification on his remarks.

During Saturday’s game, the video assistant referee (VAR) reviewed three aspects related to Gordon’s goal: whether the ball went out of play in the build-up, if there was a foul, and if there was an offside. All the reviews favored Newcastle.
Arsenal asserted that the officiating was “unacceptable,” emphasizing that players, coaches, and supporters deserve better treatment. Arteta reiterated on Tuesday, “We are obliged to voice our sentiments based on the evidence at hand. We stand up for our people, our principles, and our identity. The club’s official statement reflects the unity and transparency within the organization. This is our duty as a club.”
Arteta concluded, “There is nothing extraordinary about this; it’s consistent with our principles. I would do it again, and the club would stand by this stance until the situation is rectified.” Arsenal will face Sevilla in Champions League Group B on Wednesday at 20:00 GMT.
