In a stunning offset, Funke Akindele’s latest production, “A Tribe Called Judah,” is now the highest grossing film of the year. The film, which debuted on December 15th, has grossed over $613 million at the Nigerian box office in just 14 days!
The film is also the first Nollywood production to gross over $133 million in its opening weekend. Unsurprisingly, Funke Akinde took to Instagram to celebrate the film’s success. She posted an appreciation message in which she thanked fans for supporting the project. The post’s caption reads, “Thank you, Lord!! Thank you, Nigeria!!”
“We are grateful for the record-breaking journey of ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ in Nigeria and West Africa. #1 movie! Thanks for making it the biggest film of this year. To the cast and crew members of this great movie, we say thank you! We made a movie!!”
The actress also revealed that “A Tribe called Judah ‘’ is dedicated to her mother and is based on aspects of her life.
Further, two other titles are also currently thriving at the box office. Mercy Aigbe’s Ada Omo Daddy has grossed ₦104 million since its premiere on December 15. While Toyin Abraham’s Malaika, which premiered on December 22, has so far grossed 104.3 million within the eight-day period.
“A Tribe Called Judah” stars Funke Akindele, Timini Egbuson, Olumide Oworu, Uzee Usman, Tobi Makinde, Genoveva Umeh and Jide Kene Achufusi. Alongside, Nse Ikpe Etim, Juliana Olayode, Fathia Balogun, Yvonne Jegede, and Uzor Arukwe. The film follows a family of boys who decide to rob a small mall with the help of their mother. However, on getting there, they are faced with armed robbers.
