2022 Year-End Statistics: Burna Boy is the Most Streamed Nigerian Act; “Love, Damini” claims No. 1 Album on Apple Music, Spotify and Boomplay; Burna Crowns 2022 With 2 MOBO Awards

Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, rather known as Burna Boy is someone who sees himself as the leader of the pack, the best amongst the lot, a one-of-one, the best musician from Africa since Fela Kuti, or the most notorious title of them all, the African Giant. All that braggadocio is not just mouth talk but time over time, the celebrated act has been able to prove his worth and show why he has so much pride in his craft. The year-end statistics for 2022 without any doubt put Burna Boy and his beloved sixth album, “Love, Damini”, at the pole positions respectively.

• Apple Music:

For Nigeria’s 62nd Independence Day, Burna Boy claimed the top spot for the Top Nigerian Artists of All Time list, with three of his projects making it on the list of Top Nigerian Albums of All Time; “African Giant”, “Love, Damini”, and “Twice As Tall” are seated on the second, third, and fourth positions respectively.

Fast-forward to December 2022 and the various analytics that follow the end of the year, Burna Boy claims the top artist spot on the streaming platform across Africa. This he does thanks to his grand stage performances across the word and the July 8th released “Love, Damini” album which is crowned the most streamed Nigerian, and by extension, African album of 2022. 

Another interesting feat Burna Boy accomplished is having “Twice As Tall” (August 14, 2020) finished the year as the 8th most streamed album of 2022. 

• Spotify:

“You go bow for the result o / Nothing to discuss o, ’cause I dey win by default”, Burna Boy boastfully sings in “Last Last”, infamous for its Toni Braxton sample. Audibly, such is the case for the amazing single as it is Spotify’s most streamed song by a Nigerian act for 2022 with over 160 million streams in just 7 months of being out.

Just like the former platform, Burna Boy smiled to the top of the charts, ending 2022 as the most streamed artiste on Spotify as far as the four cardinals of Africa are concerned. To finish it off, “Love, Damini” surpassed 350 million streams, making it the highest-streamed African album of 2022. 

• Boomplay:

Burma Boy created history, becoming the first artiste on Boomplay to garner 600M+ streams. 

In addition, “Love, Damini” is the fastest-growing project on the streaming platform, amassing 300 million streams in just over four months since the release, thereby becoming the first ever project to collate such numbers on Boomplay, invariably making the album the most streamed on the music listening platform. 

• MOBO:

To cap the year, the British most prestigious Black music award show, MOBO, was held last night (Novemeber 30, 2022) and Burna Boy was the recipient of two (2) awards. The first is for the Best African Music Act 2022 and the other for the Best International Act 2022.

Although he could not be there to receive the award in person, Burna Boy recorded a video to appreciate the plaques received. Coming off his private jet, Burna said the reason he could not make it to England for the MOBO Awards 2022 is due to his pending exclusive show today (December 1, 2022) in Paris. 

Safe to say, Burna Boy is the artiste of the year for the 2022 calendar year.
